Surface Dressing

Surface dressing in Cambridgeshire, East Anglia

If you prefer the look of a gravel driveway, opt for surface dressing. It prevents the common problem of loosely laid gravel driveways of the stones migrating to the sides and off the driveway all together.
Surface dressing also provides more flexibility on the choice of colours. Whilst the traditional “Golden Gravel” and the grey granite are still the most popular, we are able to provide surface dressing in red granite from Scotland, green granite from Wales, and we have recently used white stone from the Midlands.

The procedure

Surface dressing can be used successfully on roads, car parks and driveways. It provides a fast and economical form of maintenance. The philosophy is simple: a layer of hot bitumen binder is sprayed on top of the existing surface followed by a covering of stone chippings. As the bitumen cools, being thermoplastic in nature, it hardens and adheres beneath and around the chippings to create a durable and strong surface. If the surface dressing is designed and applied correctly the chipping will form an interlocking matrix embedded in the existing surface as traffic passes over the new dressing.
